Community Hub Project – Evidence & Consultation
Building a Stronger Community Hub for Barry
Barry Rugby Football Club is now progressing plans to redevelop its clubhouse to create a modern, inclusive and sustainable community hub.
This project is not based on assumption, it is built on clear, evidenced community need and growing demand for accessible space supporting wellbeing, youth activity and community connection.
What the Community Told Us
As part of the project development, we undertook a structured community consultation to understand local priorities, needs and likely future use.
The response was clear and consistent:
· 350+ community responses received
· 98% support improving facilities
· 92% would use the facilities
· 69% would use them weekly or more
This demonstrates not just support in principle, but strong, ongoing demand for regular use.
More Than 350+ Responses
The consultation reflects more than individual responses.
A number of community organisations and user groups contributed, meaning the findings represent a wider network of existing and future users.
· Tenovus “Sing With Us” Choir (60+ regular participants)
· About Turn Wales (mental health and wellbeing support)
· Vale 50+ Strategy Forum
· Welcome Hub (running twice weekly and growing)
These groups already deliver activity from the club, demonstrating that demand is real, active and increasing.
Identified Gaps in Provision
The consultation and wider analysis highlighted clear gaps in Barry:
· Lack of inclusive and accessible community facilities
· Limited youth provision and structured activity space
· Lack of safe, welcoming social space
· Insufficient space for health and wellbeing activity
· Limited indoor, flexible community space
· Need for improved facilities supporting women, girls and inclusive use
These reflect wider community challenges in an area within the top 10% most deprived in Wales.
What the Project will Deliver
The clubhouse redevelopment will directly respond to these needs by creating:
· A modern, flexible community hub space
· Increased capacity for youth activity and engagement
· Space for health, wellbeing and support programmes
· Improved accessibility and inclusivity
· Safer, higher-quality facilities for wider community use
This will enable Barry RFC to operate as a true community anchor, supporting a broader range of local needs.
A Community-Led Project
This project builds on activity that is already happening.
The club currently supports:
· Weekly Tenovus choir sessions
· Twice-weekly Welcome Hub provision
· Veteran support partnerships
· Community use and events
Demand is already outgrowing the existing facility.
This redevelopment is about enabling the club to do more, safely and sustainably.
